Great site, grew up with cockshutt farm equipment on our farm and many others in southeast Saskatchewan. I am almost inspired to undertake a restoration project on a 1755or1855 tractor. Keep up the good work.

Hi Kelly, noticed your add on the Cockshutt site. I just started looking on sites in Canada to list my tractor, never listed one before and need advice to sell a Cockshutt 570 Super diesel with loader and cab, PTO but no 3 point hitch. Would you have any contacts or know anyone who might be interested in this unit in the Alberta, Sask. areas. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Cockshutt 30 keep losing hydraulic oil to somewhere? It doesn't appear to be getting into engine oil but after putting a gallon in the tank in front of the radiator after 5hrs of operation it's gone out of the tank with no apparent external leaks?

Dave, with the Cockshutt 20 and 30 system there is only two places oil can go. The first and most likely is an external leak which would be obvious by the trail of oil. The only other place is the front pump seal which send the oil directly into the crank case. If there is NO increase of oil level in the crank case then check your fittings for a leak only when there is pressure. Irv

we have just re wired a 540 and had a problem getting a spark at the plugs we set up the distributer and tried it without the cap it had a good spark at the coil .and when we put cap on the spark at the plugs disappeared and it was a day later we tried a new rotor arm and it solved the problem ,the spark was running down the metal shaft to earth . hope this helps

Spin the oil pump with a drill. The distributor will have to be out.

Cannot spin oil pump with distributor out like a Chevy V8. Remove valve cover. Pour 3 of the 6 qts of oil the engine requires all over the valvetrain and let run down into engine oil pan. Remove spark plugs and crank engine over with starter for 30 seconds. Pour remaining 3 qts all over valvetrain. Cam bearings are gravity fed. Crank engine over with all spark plugs still removed until you see oil draining out the overflow tube from the rocker arm shaft. At this point your engine should be primed and ready for fire in the hole if you have timing set etc.

Basically all parts from a 40 are interchangeable except for the differences in disc brake versus duo-grip; pistons; carb. It took one hour to build the first 50 by adding the bigger engine, disc brakes and bigger wheels and tires and of course decals.

I have a cockshutt 40 that seems not to have a serial number on the frame rail. The tubs casting num is 5150 and the trans num is A-11-50. Im just trying to get an idea of what I have. It does have the platform mounted all in one hyd system and PTO but other than that is fairly plain.

What is the 1 wire postition on the distrubtor on a 40
Reply
Usually number 1 cylinder is at the 8 or 9 o'clock position. To make sure since there is a good chance the engine may have been worked on at some point in time- its best to remove the valve cover and bring the number one cylinder to top dead center then look at the position of the rotor. Number 1 could be at any position if someone didn't 'clock' the distributor which many don't. That must be done with the oil pan off and taking the oil pump out and meshing the drive gear with the cam since the oil pump gear also drives the distributor. Once you find number 1 you can set that position and set the firing order from that point.

Am a little confused... you don't like the harvest gold but are asking for paint codes for it? There are no paint codes established by the club. Ask 10 different collectors and you'll probably receive 20 different opinions. The original harvest gold faded rapidly and reportedly from older club members, who said it faded out in only a couple of months. The faded color we see 50 years later is the shade everyone usually paints them and they look pretty good. 1980 Ford pastel sand is a color frequently suggested. There are several others that are similar. Ford used a vermillion red on 2010 F150's. Many dealers repainted earlier models red belly. Too bad Cockshutt didn't start out with this paint scheme from the start. Good luck.

Is the transmission oil filler on a 1952 "40" Cockshutt back near the PTO shaft? How full do you fill it and how do you determine the proper level?
Reply
Keith
6/21/2013 11:17:36 pm
The fill plug for the transmission is on the side of the transmission. Filling it here allows oil to also for the rearend. Fill to level of plug. It takes awhile to run into the rearend so you will need to do it a few times to be accurate. The fill level to the pto is separate and works best to keep level to where you can see it through the plug hole within 1-2 inches. Using 80w90 will be fine. Do not use trans hydraulic fluid or anything of the sort. Gear lube only.

Are you asking for a step by step instruction on how to remove the engine? I did it not long ago so most is still in my memory.
Reply
Shims under the block? Or shims under the engine mounts? If under the engine mounts- between the mounts and frame are there to help with alignment of the input shaft in relationship to the crank.. Variations in castings sometimes required a few shims under the front mounts to raise front of engine a fraction or two if needed. If alignment is way off, the clutch may bind or cause other excessive wear on bearings etc. Tractors I have worked on are usually worn enough it doesn't matter- plenty of clearance due use and abuse compared to when everything is new.

On a cockshutt 30 are the spark plug boots at the spark plugs angled or straight? From looking at the sketch in the operators manual, it looks like they are 90 degree angle at the spark plug ends, but they also look like they had no boots either covering the angle connector. I am going to re do my spark plug wires and I'm wondering what most restorers have done.

8/1/2013 11:47:13 pm
Straight boots is what works best. Some people like angled. I like to keep the wires away from the block and use straight. A lot of them didn't use boots. Have replaced several sets over the years that the wires looked ancient and they didn't have the boots but its hard to tell if they were original or not.

We are new to this and wondering who to talk to. My husband can do some mechanical work but is having trouble figuring out what is wrong with our 1967 cockshutt. So when he has it on drive he doesnt have any power to move the tra tor , forward, backwards.... when its warmed up , when it's cold it works fine. If he engaged the PTO he loses complete power. He has cleaned the filter, did an oil change with the oil, ( but by reading some comments, thinking might need to change this) would greatly appreciate any help. He is stubborn and doesnt like bugging ppl for help and we need this to keep expanding to do work on our farm. Thanks again

Where does the wire from the distributor go on the coil? I have a 1948 cockshutt 30 with stock 6 volt system. It appears from the service manual that it is Positive Ground. Am I correct on that? If so, do I hook the distributor wire to the (+) side of the coil?
Reply
Irv Buttray

Connecting grounds, coils and distributors have a general rule. It doesn't matter if its 12 volt or 6 volt. If you use a positive ground system then positive side of coil goes to distributer. If using a negative ground system then hook the negative side of coil to distributer.

Drive gear or internal pump gears? Used gears work or a good used oil pump? As for the head gasket thickness, the gasoline, distillate, LPG and diesel all use the same head gasket so if you measure any one of them you should have your thickness. Irv

Henk, if your question is whether the Buda 4B153 engine uses an oil pump with gears inside the pump, yes, it does. I had one apart not long ago. 2 gears. At the end of the oil pump there is also the drive gear that runs off the camshaft. The distributor fits into the oil pump and is driven by the oil pump gear if I recall correctly.

There have been a few cases of this happening especially in the earlier tractors. A lot of cases may have been prevented by making sure lubrication and adjustments were kept up. Routine repairs and worn part replacements are necessary on these old tractors. A lot of times they were put off only to result in a major break down. Now you have to replace an axel. There is serial number changes in parts so make sure you get one from that range or they will not work. Irv

I have a cockshutt 30 in which I just rebuilt the engine. It has a slight Ping internally at the same spot in rotation by hand. All bearings look good. The ping stops when you take the pushrods out. Some say it's weak valve springs causing the cam gear to kick backwards for just a moment....any ideas???

You said the engine was rebuilt so would this mean the head was done with new springs. If rebuilt by a shop they would have checked the springs before assembly. Was there any inter change or replacement parts used? If you think the problem is in this area I would check the lifters to be sure they slide up and down in engine with no catch. Also check the push rods to be all the same length and no bends and the rocker arms to be sure they move with out any catch or wobble. Engine noise can be a funny thing to track down because they transmit easily through out. Irv

I am almost sure the head still has the original valve springs. Some of the springs have a shim or two under them. I can take my hand a feel a difference between the springs by pushing on them. I guess I need to have the springs tested and pull all the lifters out as well

I would check all those parts and make sure they are all usable and in tolerance. Process of elimination may be the cheapest way to go and eventually find the problem. Irv

Anyone tried some sort of hi/lo range affair on Cockshutt 40/50 models? Cockshutts 580 when in the beginning stage had something like a hi/lo so it had 12 speeds forward ? Thanks, Dave

To be honest, the best way (and I've done this before) is to first pull the head and really look at the cylinders. If it's just a matter of light flash rust freezing the rings, no problem. Some penetrating oil in each cylinder and then take a hardwood block and a 2lb sledge and alternate smacking each cylinder until you get movement. For extra stubborn pistons, put a diesel soaked rag in one cylinder at a time and light it on fire (again being mindful of safety... i.e. remove your gas tank if it has had gas in it recently or currently)

Good afternoon all, could anyone tell me where I can get an oil pan gasket for a 1962 cockshutt 550. I think it's a continental engine. Not sure if it's a flat sided oil pan, which I've seen mentioned in some parts listings on the net. I'm doing this for someone else and don't know much about the tractor. Thank you for any help you can offer

Hello. My husband is working on a friend's Cockshutt Super 570 with a Hercules engine. He is having a terrible time finding parts for it. He's tried about 10 different places from a list I researched for him and no one has what he's looking for. So I was given this website.Thank you.

What parts do you need? Have you contacted Hercules in Canton? They may have some of the parts or know who to contact. They sometimes have prints of the parts so you can have them made. Good luck!

Have a Cockshutt hydraulic reservoir platform that will most likely fit any 40,50 or 35 but the ears for the 3 pt hitch rocker arm shaft are broken off at the back, any ideas that anyone has for repairing these ears strong enough to be able to use the setup for 3 pt again? Thanks, Dave [email protected] 607-435-8839

Ken, Thanks for the idea, have you tried or have had it done successfully? There is only one piece from one side left so something would have to be used to conform to the rock shaft dimensions?
