I have a 550 gas (Hercules) that is running hot just pulling a rake (pass 200 after only a couple of pass= 2miles). Might have pushed it a bit too much. I was thinking redoing the top end. Any source for a gasket kit for that Hercules? Thanks in advance.

If it the tractor runs well, I suggest some other first steps, and maybe you've already done so (?) : 1) Change/remove the thermostat. 2) Is the radiator water warm? if not something is restricting or preventing water from circulating through the radiator and engine. Sometimes old radiator hoses disintegrate on the inside and block flow. Good luck!

Did Cockshutt 30 tractors have a fully enclosed battery cover? Or was it just a top cover?

Replacing spring and starter teeth on cockshutt 30 starter auto lite 4081 how much torque should be on the hold down bolt on the spring end towards the housing? Have had some of these springs break and they've broke right where the curl on the spring where the hold down bolt is, am wondering if the spring breaking was the result ot too much torque? Dave
Irv Buttray
2/10/2016 04:45:19 pm
Dave, I have never seen an actual torque spec for them but next time I'm at my local starter shop I will ask. All most all of the springs that I have seen break was at the bolt loop. If I do this my self I just tighten them good and snug because there should be a tabbed washer to bend up so they don't turn. Irv

Repairing Cockshutt 30 starter by replacing spring and tooth unit, how much torque to put on hold down bolt, the bolt that is closest to the starters housing (the other bolt on the unit is already mounted to the shaft and tabbed over to prevent it from turning off)? Starter is an auto lite 4081.

Cockshutt 30, replacing rear crank shaft oil seal and flywheel from a parts 30, the original seal was in backwards and now on the old flywheel (starter teeth gone) the pilot bearing seal is towards the crankshaft whereas the replacement pilot shaft seal on the parts tractor flywheel is towards the transmission (which believe is correct ,is it, that's my question)? Thanks,Dave

Irv, Thanks! This tractor has an aftermarket 3pt hitch have never seen elsewhere, some of it home made but it doesn't look like the main frame that bolts on the back, that looks commercial that being said was wondering if you still have 3pt hitch setups available for Cockshutt30's? Thanks again,Dave

Irv, Thanks again on replies! A couple of other questions, is there an attachment that can be mounted on the Cockshutt 30 engine to replace the current oil filter canister with a setup for a spin on oil filter? Other question is when discussing the Cockshutt 40 or 50 where they're not equipped with LPTO, is the flywheel already splined to accept a splined shaft so as to e able to just add an available LPTO you already have? Dave

I would say most any filter mount but one from a buda-allis or even from a continental should work. I may have them. It has been my experience most of the 40/50 have the center hub and input shaft mounted in them for easy addition of a PTO unit later. This is not absolute because I have seen some with nothing. If you pull the PTO delete plate off and see the input shaft end there then the parts are present. If not then there is still a good chance that the drive coupler is present in fly wheel but the shaft is removed. Remember there are two different shafts depending on if you have direct drive or a pump shut off handle. Irv

Irv Thanks again on all the help! My wife say I'm needy so if you don't mind what's the torque for the pressure plate bolts on the 30 flywheel, replacing the clutch and cannot find specification for the ft lbs of torque, the bolts head size is half inch but diameter is 9/32nds? On the 40's 50's with no pto not sure what was meant by two shafts? Had a 35L that had the on/off "T" handle but no hydraulics until coming across an old Cockshutt dealer that the only thing he had left was a 3pt hitch platform with the hydraulics on it then the "T" handle had a use that being said am confused on what you meant
Dave DeForest
3/4/2016 02:56:52 pm
Irv, From last question, moved up to top of wording and couldn't get back down to finish? Did you mean by two shafts the Lpto and the shaft from the "T" handle or did you mean the short shaft that comes off with taking the Lpto clutch off and the Lpto shaft? Thanks Dave
Irv

I usually just tighten them so they feel good and tight with out breaking them Book says 60 -70 pounds. On the earlier 40 a full time accessory shaft was used to drive the PTO/hydraulic pump. The pump drive gear is thicker and riveted into place. Later and on the 35/50 they went to the pump shut off handle located by the shifter. The pump drive gear is thinner and on a slider. hope that clarifies it for you.

Jake that is correct. Seems that a lack of lubrication as well as incorrect shimming was a big factor in this. Those gears were there for sold as a matched set. I have not found any here as of yet. Phil Heisey did have some made, sold as a set only I believe. they are kind of pricey but not easily made so probably comparable. I will keep my eye out for a used gear or you can contact Phil about new ones. Irv

Posted earlier but not sure in electronic never never land where the question went but is there any clutch or device you can use on the Cockshutt 40/50 series that could give you a hi/ lo range to have 12 speeds? In a couple of "Classic Tractor" books have seen the statement made ( on a Golden Arrow) that an optional hi/ lo range was available but have never heard about any of them having one? Thanks, Dave

It depends on the region. In areas with stones very rare, gumbo land not many. Light sandy land ok. It is has been 50 years since anyone plowed in Sk. so they are all rare here. I cannot help with the paint but will watch this as I have a 2 bottom.
